Basic equipment for tree climbing: what do you need to climb trees?

The basic equipment includes a rope system, a tree climbing harness, an ascending system, and rope clamps as well as various carabiners, pulleys, and slings. In some cases, tree climbing spurs are also required. You should also always have a pair of work gloves and a protective helmet. Additional gear like a cambium saver, throw bag, and throw line help install the rope from below.

Tree climbing ropes

Whether using the single rope technique (SRT), doubled rope technique (DdRT), or moving rope technique (MRT), anyone who climbs trees professionally needs special tree climbing ropes. Like all of our ropes, we develop and produce our tree climbing ropes at our head office in Isny im Allgäu. Rope production is the heart and soul of EDELRID. Traditional craftsmanship comes together with innovation, research, and practical expertise to create premium ropes that offer the best quality, safety, and comfort. Our tree climbing ropes impress with high abrasion resistance, low working elongation, and outstanding handling properties. A particularly easy-to-grip sheath structure makes the ropes easier to climb while bright colors increase their visibility in trees. We often use core braids so that tree climbing ropes can be easily spliced. All EDELRID tree climbing ropes are certified to EN 1891.

A rope is only ever as strong as its termination

The use of a splice as a compact and clean rope termination has a long tradition in tree care. Unlike a knot, it only minimally reduces a rope’s breaking load. At EDELRID, you can order tree climbing ropes ex works with our patented SPLY. This innovative splice is extremely compact as the diameter of the rope does not widen and there is only a minimal increase in thickness in the splice eye. As such, it passes through the most common SRT and MRT devices, eliminating the arduous task of pulling the rope through. Our splice furthermore offers greater safety as part of the core runs through the entire eye. The SPLY is handmade in Isny.

Tree climbing harnesses

Tree climbing harnesses are classed as personal protective equipment (PPE) and usually certified as sit harnesses and restraint belts (EN 813, EN 358). Many tree climbing harnesses can also be converted into full body harnesses according to EN 361 through the addition of a chest harness. As arborists often spend their entire day wearing a harness, we pay particular attention to ergonomics and comfort. Tree climbing harnesses also generally have one or two movable tie-in points (sliding D) to guarantee the greatest possible freedom of movement so that you can move in all directions in trees without hindrance. The additional eyelets on the sides are used to attach a lanyard for work positioning.

Protective helmet

PPE vs. oak processionary moth caterpillars

Contact with the oak processionary moth’s caterpillars (or more specifically, their hairs) causes serious health damage. Certain control measures are therefore required when working in a tree where contact is possible as well as when performing particular measures to combat the caterpillars.
